Thoughts on Luke 6:12-16 (Jesus Calls the Apostles)

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountain-side to pray, and spent the night praying to God.  When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Jesus went to pray somewhere.  He spent the whole night praying to God.  Wow.  This must have been something really important for Jesus to spend so much time praying about it!  Immediately, we have a take-away from this short passage.  Pray!  Jesus was the son of God, yet he still prayed.  For important decisions, he prayed A LOT!  I think we should probably do the same for all our decisions, especially the big ones.

It says that Jesus called his disciples to him.  Now, if he chose twelve of them, doesn't that mean that there were more than twelve to choose from?  Yes it does!  His disciples were those who were following him and learning from him.  I wonder how many were following him from the beginning.  I wonder what was it about the twelve that God saw and told Jesus to pick them.

Here's the list of the disciples again.  This is one of those things that you should know.

  1. Simon Peter
  2. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother
  3. James
  4. John
  5. Philip
  6. Bartholomew
  7. Matthew
  8. Thomas
  9. James, son of Alphaeus
  10. Simon, "the Zealot"
  11. Judas, son of James ("Thaddeus")
  12. Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus
I mean, it's just twelve names.  You can easily come up with twelve names of celebrities.  You can easily think of twelve bands that you like.  You could probably even list the names of the members of several bands that you love.  I have a hard time remembering things, so I searched for a way to try and remember these names.

Sang to the tune of "Jesus Loves Me"

Jesus called them one by one,
Peter, Andrew, James and John,
Next, came Philip, Thomas too,
Matthew and Bartholomew.

Yes, Jesus called them,
Yes, Jesus called them,
Yes, Jesus called them,
He called them one by one.

James the one they called the less,
Simon, also Thaddeus,
Twelfth apostle Judas made,
Jesus was by him betrayed.

[Repeat Chorus.]

Matthias then took Judas' place,
To preach to men of every race,
Paul three preaching trips did make,
And went to Rome for Jesus' sake.
This song was posted on the DLTK Bible site. This site has a bunch of songs, poems, arts, crafts and more available for free.

Take a minute to read over the names of those Jesus called.

Add your name to the list.
Jesus has called you to follow him and learn from him!
