- Mary is told that she will have child by the Holy Spirit
- Mary Visits Elizabeth
- Mary praises God
Now, that's the nutshell version of what happens, but there is so much good stuff in these Scriptures! In the first section, Mary is visited by the angel Gabriel, who tells her that she is going to have a baby and that it will be the Holy Spirit who comes to her. She does not doubt the word of God. She not only accepts it, but welcomes it. Mary could not have been more than a teenager when she found out what was going to happen. She was betrothed already and would now be pregnant. She doesn't ask the angel what she should tell Joseph or how he will react to this new development. She trusts in God. What an honor to have the Savior of the World, the King of Kings living and growing within her!
With this kind of news, you have to tell someone! I believe that's why Mary went to visit Elizabeth. The Bible says she spent three months with Elizabeth. The meeting is incredible though! The baby in Elizabeth's womb (John) leapt for joy at the sound of Mary's voice. The Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth at that moment! This is all from just seeing Mary and hearing her voice and knowing that Jesus was coming. WOW!
Jesus is coming! Jesus is coming! Man, that is some tremendous news! Your heart should be doing back-flips right now! Jesus is coming! Guess what! The Holy Spirit has already come. If you ask Jesus into your heart, he will send the Holy Spirit to you as a comfort and a guide. Confess your sins to Jesus and ask for forgiveness and receive this joy that no one can steal from you. Jesus is coming! Get ready! It is so amazing to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It's an immeasurable joy and love that fills you to overflowing. It is so wonderful that sometimes you just want to weep from the sheer joy of it.
Can you imagine what it must have been like for Mary? The Holy Spirit came to her and gave her the baby Jesus. The baby savior filled her. She had Jesus growing and living inside of her. The one who would save the world was hers. That must have been an incredible joy that could not possibly be contained. Hey look, Mary has a song of praise to sing!
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
- Luke 1:46-55 -
Mary was so filled up that all she could do was praise God and give him the glory. This is the Savior, Messiah, that her nation has been praying and waiting for. How great is her joy to know that salvation will come in her lifetime and it will be through her son!
We are truly blessed. We can know Jesus Christ. We can receive his free gift of forgiveness. He can fill us with his Holy Spirit.
Dear reader, my prayer for you is that you would come to know Jesus. If you already know Jesus, praise the Lord! I pray that your relationship with Him would grow stronger and deeper. May you be blessed!
